Nearsighted kids, island light: why outdoor time matters

Maui gives kids plenty of reasons to play outside, and research suggests their eyes may benefit too.

Nearsightedness, or myopia, is becoming more common in children around the world. Far-away things look blurry, and in kids it often gets worse each year as the eye grows. Here's what research says about one simple habit that may help.

Why myopia matters beyond blurry vision

Glasses fix the blur, but higher levels of myopia are linked to a greater risk of eye problems later in life, including retinal problems. That's why eye doctors now talk not just about correcting myopia, but about slowing it.

What outdoor time may do

Studies suggest that children who spend more time outdoors in daylight are less likely to become nearsighted. Researchers think bright outdoor light and looking at faraway distances both play a role. The evidence is strongest for delaying the start of myopia; outdoor time alone isn't a treatment for myopia that's already progressing.

Making it easy on Maui

  • Build outdoor play into the day — the beach, the park, a walk after school
  • Protect eyes and skin with hats, sunglasses with UV protection, and sunscreen
  • During homework and screen time, follow the 20-20-20 habit: every 20 minutes, look about 20 feet away for 20 seconds
  • Keep books and screens at a comfortable distance

When habits aren't enough

If your child's prescription keeps increasing, there are options that may help slow progression, such as special glasses lenses, myopia-control contact lenses, overnight lenses, or low-dose atropine eye drops. Not every option fits every child, so the starting point is an exam.
